Welcome to the 2nd edition of this month! 👋 A lot has been published and shared within the movement since our last email. We wanted to highlight these three below:
🐣 Movement news:
Animal Advocacy Careers’ Talent Survey 2024 is out. Notable findings include:
When hiring, organizations prefer to see more “personal background or involvement in specific networks or communities relevant to (the) organisation's goals”, “more work experience inside the movement”, and a “clearer demonstration of relevant specific skills (i.e. better work samples)” from candidates.
Best-performing staff usually have the “ability to learn quickly”, “strong analytical and problem-solving skills”, and “creative thinking and capacity for innovation”, among other traits.
The hardest roles to hire for include leadership and strategy, fundraising and development, and campaigns and stakeholder engagement. Compared to AAC’s previous survey, overall talent bottlenecks remain similar with some small differences: campaigns becoming increasingly difficult to fill, while policy careers are slightly easier. Regional differences persist.
💰 Funding opportunities:
Several grants are accepting applications with deadlines in the next few weeks! These include Thrive Grants (1 March), the Strategic Animal Funding Circle (10 March), and Animal Charity Evaluators’ 2025 Movement Grants (14 March).
🔔 Call to action:
The UK government is considering allowing insect protein in animal feed in England and Wales. This is worrying as the government explicitly says changes would “enable investment in the insect protein sector”. Take 5-10 minutes by 1 April to tell the British government that you’re against it. Detailed instructions here.
Warmly,
Sofia Balderson
Hive Co-founder and Executive Director
